The History of Soldier Field
Soldier Field in Chicago opened in 1924 as Municipal Grant Park Stadium and was officially dedicated in November 1926 to the American soldiers who had died in combat. Originally engineered to house as many as 74,280 spectators, the unique design of the field allowed additional seating to be added to the interior field, the upper promenades, and along the open field in the end zone to bring that number up to as many as 100,000.
Over the years, the stadium has been home to a variety of storied teams, including the Chicago Bears, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Chicago Fire, Chicago Spurs, the USFL team the Chicago Blitz, and was even home to the Chicago Enforcers of the short-lived XFL league. In 2002, Soldier Field underwent a transformation with crews deconstructing the aging interior to rebuild it, but leaving the exterior façade in place. This renovation made it more comfortable and modern for visitors and added amenities such as LED video technology, skyboxes, modern seating, and more user-friendly facilities for guests. After the renovations, the stadium became the first in the NFL to achieve LEED status, recognizing its efforts to become more environmentally responsible and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
Although the stadium is no longer on the register of historic places, it is still first in the hearts and minds of Chicagoans who have fond memories of games, concerts, political rallies, and other events within its walls.
